Margaret is a reluctant patient. She came here because she
has nowhere else to go.
When she married, she lost her insurance (she had been
on Medicaid due to her disabilities). Her husband works a job with no
healthcare benefits. Margaret suffers from bipolar disorder, depression,
anxiety and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). She came to the
clinic to get help with accessing her inhalers. And the only reason she did
that is because without them, she can’t breathe.
She doesn’t want to talk with our doctors about her mental
health issues. So, they go untreated. And she suffers, silently, alone.
Her family will not qualify for Medicaid expansion – her
husband’s job pays enough that they are above 133% of the Federal Poverty
Guidelines. But, they will qualify for assistance with health insurance through
the marketplace. She will be able to afford insurance and receive the
comprehensive care that she needs.
